Celebrate CT’s State Flower: Mt. Laurel! – Saturday, June 12th
Time: 10 AM (Lecture), 11 AM and 1 PM (Tours) Cost: Free
Come visit the nursery when the world’s largest collection of mountain laurel is in all its glory. Owner and Kalmia hybridizer Dick Jaynes will present a talk on his favorite Kalmia and tease you with what’s to come in the world of mountain laurel. Dick along with his staff will also lead guided tours of the nursery grounds highlighting many unique and unusual specimens. Many choice Kalmia selections will be available for purchase. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the tremendous diversity of flower colors and plant habits now available in Connecticut’s state flower. All B&B mountain laurel will be discounted 10%.
New American Azaleas and Woody Plants! – Sunday, June 20th

Come explore the world of American azaleas with Clarence Towe who has become a leading expert on the subject. His recently published book “American Azaleas” is the definitive reference for these beautiful shrubs. Clarence also has the unique ability to locate unusual variants of other native plants. For more than 30 years he has brought to our attention weeping, fastigiate, variegated and dwarf forms of numerous woody plants. Clarence will give an illustrated talk sharing some of his discoveries from the wilds of America including recently discovered native azalea species. The propagation and evaluation of new selections will also be discussed. Plan to purchase his book, walk the nursery grounds and chit chat with him about plants and people. He is a great story teller!

Cutting Propagation for the Home Gardener –

Come join our Propagation and Plant Development Manager, Adam Wheeler, for this fun-filled, hands-on workshop focused on the propagation of plants by summer stem cuttings. Participants will be given a brief lecture that examines the techniques and skills required to grow plants from cuttings. Following the lecture participants will construct their own home propagation systems and stick a selection of cuttings from the nursery collection.
Sustainable Residential Landscaping - Planting for your Home's Own Microclimates
and the Greater Environmental Context – Sunday, August 22nd

What are sustainable landscape goals and why should a home owner concern themselves? Besides altruism and the obvious future of our planet, as it turns out, natural designs save time, energy and money and can result in reduced heating, cooling and maintenance costs. Indigenous and sustainable plant materials also better fit the environmental context. Through this talk, Landscape Designer Amy Sampson will describe how to evaluate microclimates and coordinate landscape choices with natural events and cycles. Examples of sustainable plants appropriate for different sun and wind exposures will be provided. Additional sustainable landscape goals will be discussed including ways in which to minimize site impact, restore damaged sites, reuse and recycle and create a healthy environment.

Luscious Landscaping with Fruiting Trees, Shrubs and Vines -

What could be more pleasant than picking luscious fruits from a plant that you also admire for its beauty? Author and landscape consultant Lee Reich will discuss some of the best trees, shrubs, and vines for this purpose, plants that require little maintenance yet provide stunning flowers in spring, color in autumn and neat form in winter. For landscaping, the ideal is a plant that also is low maintenance, being pest-resistant and requiring little or no pruning. Learn how to grow shadbush, gumi, actinidia, medlar, and other ornamental, fruiting plants, and how to use them to beautify your yard. Lee plans to bring samples of different fruits for tasting.

Come explore your artistic side during the most spirited time of the year in this wreath making workshop. The Broken Arrow staff will teach you the basics of holiday wreath making so you can create your own masterpiece! Using simple, 12” or 16”, re-usable wreath rings, participants will be able to produce a gorgeous traditional wreath. We will provide an assortment of unique greens and other natural materials you can include in your wreaths. The only things you need to bring are work gloves, pruners and your imagination.
