Welcome to Broken Arrow Nursery!
Broken Arrow Nursery is getting a facelift. This past winter we were awarded an Agriculture Viability Grant from the State of Connecticut. The grant will be used for the construction of a new 28 x 36’ post and beam sales barn as well as upgrading our website. In an attempt to separate production and sales activities, we have moved our production facilities (2 new 22 x 120’ hoophouses) leaving our original growing area strictly for sales. We are confident this move will result in an easier and more enjoyable shopping experience. Our new barn will serve as a “gateway to the nursery sales area” and provide a comfortable place for educational programs and landscape consultation. During the Christmas season, visitors will be able to watch us create our handcrafted wreaths in a cozy atmosphere complete with the warmth from a woodstove.
As many have come to expect we continue to seek out new and exciting plants to offer at the nursery. Our travels over the past year to horticultural hot spots in Ohio and North Carolina have opened our eyes to many new treasures and yielded an ever expanding “plants to get” list. This year’s catalog reflects many of these fine specimens as well as more than 150 other new items! So what’s new you may ask! Well, tree and shrub buffs should look to try Betula nigra ‘Shilo Splash’, an exciting variegated form of river birch; Hamamelis virginiana ‘Mohonk Red’, an unusual reddish-orange flowering form of our native witchhazel; or Ilex verticillata ‘Golden Verboom’, a bright yellow fruited form of winterberry holly. Additionally, we continue to expand our selection of rare and unusual woodland perennials. The vast number of available Arisaemas, commonly referred to as Jack-in-the pulpits, is exploding! We are hooked on these bizarre and unusual plants. From the strikingly beautiful A. sikokianum to the stately, 5-6’ A. heterophyllum, this cool group of plants has something for everyone. Other unusual perennial treasures include the Japanese wood poppy or Glaucidium palmatum with its purple-pink, poppy-like flowers and Paeonia mlokosewitschii, the infamous Molly the Witch peony whose gorgeous yellow flowers will brighten any woodland garden.
We hope when you visit us this year you will be pleased with the changes and effort we have made to make your shopping experience at Broken Arrow more enjoyable and rewarding. Be sure to check out our events listing as we have added a couple of new programs focusing on design with the collector in mind. These programs will feature lectures, tours and some hands on activities. As before we always welcome your suggestions and comments as we are the first to admit there are always ways to improve what we do. With the witch hazels starting to open, can spring be that far behind? Let’s hope not!
Happy Gardening in 2008!
