RETAIL NURSERY
Greetings from Broken Arrow Nursery!
What a crazy spring we’ve had here at the nursery. A heat wave of 90+ degrees in March followed by 30 degrees and frost in mid May. We’ve grown tired of covering and uncovering greenhouses and ferrying plants in and out of sheds and barns. Clearly this is a formula that Mother Nature worked up. We trust she knows what she’s doing!
The April and May sales seasons were amazing with plentiful sunny days and ample get out and shop weather. Hopefully this trend will continue and you’ll find more occasions to stop by over the coming months to discover a few more treasures to add to your gardens.
Buddlia davidii 'Evil-Ways'
Most people know that we’re quite a bit different than your run of the mill nursery. Since we grow most of the plants we sell our inventory is in constant flux. New items are always becoming available and many customers remark that they see new and different plants each time they visit. As the season progresses and plants fill out their containers many of the “summer” catalog items will become retail ready. Among the most exciting is the compact shrub Diervilla sessilifolia Cool Splash™ which boasts rich green leaves that are boldly edged with bright white margins. In addition, the irresistible 3” apricot-orange blossoms of Campsis grandiflora ‘Morning Calm’ are sure to heat up your summer garden as will the eye-catching bright gold foliage and dark purple flowers of Buddleia davidii ‘Evil Ways’.
Kalmia latifolia 'Minuet'
Over the coming months we have a number of exciting events on the schedule. Coming up on Saturday June 12th is our annual Mountain Laurel open house. This long running and always popular event features a free lecture by our owner and acclaimed Kalmia hybridizer Richard Jaynes. Dick’s talk will showcase some of his favorite mountain laurels and tease you with what’s to come in the future of Kalmia breeding. Guided tours of our extensive collection will be given throughout the day showcasing many of our specimens at their best.
On Sunday June 20 we invite you to come explore the world of American azaleas with azalea expert and author Clarence Towe. Clarence’s recently published book “American Azaleas” is the definitive reference for these beautiful shrubs. He will give an illustrated talk sharing some of his discoveries from the wilds of America including recently discovered native azalea species. The propagation and evaluation of new selections will also be discussed. Plan to purchase his book, walk the nursery grounds and chit chat with him about plants and people. He is a great story teller!
Registration information and additional details for all scheduled events can be found on our events page. We also encourage you to sign up for our e-mail newsletter to learn about future lectures and workshops as well as other sales and gardening opportunities.
As always, gift cards are available for those who wish to take the guess-work out of gift giving. Our gift cards can be purchased in any dollar amount and can be shipped directly to the recipient with a hardcopy of our most recent catalog. What a perfect present for the difficult to buy plant fanatic. It’s always the right size, right color and they’re sure to find plenty of plants to choose from.
