Shop Broken Arrow Nursery for rare and unusual plants

Welcome to our Fall 2010 Mail Order Catalog!

Once again we’ve had a crazy year here at Broken Arrow Nursery.  The weather has been a complete polar opposite from last season with a very early start to the season and record warmth for several months on end.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature has been stingy giving up rain and we’ve found ourselves struggling to keep things irrigated.  Certainly a far cry from the moist and cool conditions we saw last year.  Fortunately, the plants have enjoyed the positive growing temps and look great!

We’re quite happy with our Fall 2010 Mail Order Catalog!  Once again we’ve managed to sneak in a few fine treasures and treats for you to ponder over.  With more than 75 new items and numerous old favorites we’re sure you’ll find a few worthwhile plants to add to your garden.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Yuki Gessho'
Hydrangea paniculata
'Yuki Gessho'
Variegated foliage continues to be one of our favorite elements to use in the garden and this fall’s catalog has an abundance of it!  The exciting new variegated selection of panicle hydrangea, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Yuki Ghesso’ is at the top of the list with its amazing, sun tolerant, white and cream marbled foliage.  Likewise, the golden edged foliage of Caryopteris x clandonensis ‘Summer Sorbet’ continues to impress us, especially when set off by the deep blue, late season floral display.  Not to be left out is the unique dove tree (Davidia involucrata ‘Lady Dahlia’) boasting a spring display of bright green leaves embossed with a bold gold splash along the midrib.

Carpinus caroliniana
Carpinus caroliniana
Many who have gardened with us in the past know that northeast US native plants are one of our passions.  This year’s offerings include many fine and underutilized selections including Carpinus caroliniana (ironwood), a fine small specimen tree with a muscular, steel-blue trunk and brilliant orange-red fall color.  Other “down-home” favorites include the unassuming and rarely encountered Dirca palustris (leatherwood) and the impressive sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana).

Kalmia latfolia 'Carol'
Kalmia latfolia 'Carol'

Our Kalmia latifolia (Mountain Laurel) selection is as strong as it’s ever been with more than 15 cultivars to choose from.  The classic selection ‘Carol’ is always popular with its intense red buds that contrast well with soft pink, newly opened flowers.  Equally impressive is the vigorous grower ‘Good Show’ which displays pale pink flowers set off by rich green leaves.   Those looking for something different will enjoy ‘Willowcrest’ with its near white flowers and unusual willow-like foliage that adds an entirely new texture and appeal to this fine species.

In the world of perennials be sure to check out Epimedium x ‘Kaguyahime’, a fantastic selection whose heavily mottled foliage shines in the spring shade garden. For those seeking an exciting plant for the late summer border, Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘ Henry Eillers’ may be just for you. This stately beauty boasts bright yellow flowers with unique finely quilled petals.

As always, gift cards are available for those who wish to take the guess-work out of gift giving.  Our gift cards can be purchased in any dollar amount and can be shipped directly to the recipient with a hardcopy of our most recent catalog.  What a perfect present for the difficult to buy plant fanatic. It’s always the right size, right color and they’re sure to find plenty of plants to choose from.

Happy and Healthy Gardening.
