Staff: Who's Who at Broken Arrow Nursery


Richard Jaynes - Owner
Richard Jaynes - Owner Broken Arrow NurseryDick has always enjoyed growing plants. Our acres of Christmas tree fields trace back to a couple hundred spruce seedlings planted by Dick as part of a 4-H project in 1947. A graduate from Wesleyan University (BA) and Yale (Ph.D.), he worked at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station for 25 years as a plant breeder and horticulturist with specialties in chestnut and mountain laurel. He has received numerous awards for his research and edited the reference book Nut Tree Culture in North America and authored Kalmia: Mountain Laurel and Related Species. He resigned from the Experiment Station in 1984 to start Broken Arrow Nursery.


Sally Jaynes - Owner
Sally Jaynes - Owner Broken Arrow NurseryShe is transitioning her office manager duties to Burton Jaynes. She's been managing the office since 1984 doing everything from payroll to baking chocolate chip cookies for birthdays.


Andrew Brand – Nursery & Sales Manager
Andy Brand - Nursery Sales ManagerAndy, like Dick, has been involved with growing plants since childhood. He received his BS and MS from the University of Connecticut in Horticulture and Plant Tissue Culture.  Andy has been an employee of Broken Arrow Nursery for 17 years and now manages the nursery.  He was the past president of the American Rhododendron Society, past president of the Connecticut Butterfly Association, past President of Connecticut Nursery and Landscape Association (CNLA), and received the Young Nursery Professional Award from the New England Nursery Association. He is an amateur naturalist with a strong interest in native plants and attracting wildlife to yards.


Carl Galanter – Perennial Manager
Carl Galanter - Perennial Manager Broken Arrow NurseryCarl started as an intern at Broken Arrow while completing his degree program in "Horticulture and Landscaping" at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Carl oversees the propagation and purchasing of perennials; the more unusual, the better, particularly selections of Arisaema, Disporum, Helleborus, and Polygonatum.


Burton Jaynes – Business Manager
Burton Jaynes - Business Manager Broken Arrow NurseryAfter 19 years working as a Ph.D. chemist and a senior director at Pfizer, Inc., Burton is taking over Sally's role as business manager as well as helping out wherever needed around the nursery.  During the fall of 2007, he successfully completed the CT Accredited Nursery Professional course offered by CNLA.

  
Mark Marenholz – Field Production Manager
Mark Marenholz - Field Production Manager Broken Arrow NurseryMark graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2002 with a BS in horticulture. His passion for plants has grown over the past 11 years that he has worked for Broken Arrow. Mark performs many tasks at the nursery from overseeing field production and landscape installation and helping out with nursery sales. Mark loves the outdoors and wildlife and has contributed greatly to the nursery.


Adam Wheeler – Propagation & Plant Development Manager
Adam Wheeler - Plant Development Manager Broken Arrow NurseryAdam comes to us from the University of Vermont where he completed his BS degree in Urban Forestry and Landscape Horticulture.  At the nursery, Adam manages plant propagation and the acquisition and development of new plants. In his spare time he enjoys collecting rare and unusual plants, rock climbing and competitive giant pumpkin growing.


Linda Jaynes - Webmaster
Linda Jaynes - Webmaster Broken Arrow NurseryOur computer jockey and part-time all-around nursery person. She is a CT Accredited Nursery Professional. She, her husband (Jotham), two brothers (Burton and Scott) and their wives (Susan and Allison) and all 9 grandsons are usually around weekends in December assisting with Christmas tree sales.


Amy Sampson – Landscape Consultant & Sales
Amy Sampson - Landscape Consultant Broken Arrow NurseryAmy is one of our enthusiastic sales staff and a landscape designer. She teaches residential landscape design and ProLandscape TM software courses at Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC). Amy is a CT Accredited Nursery Professional who loves to help customers find plant materials to match their needs, personal tastes and their property's environmental conditions.

 

Jude Hsiang - Sales
 
Jude HsiangGrowing up in Maine, Jude enjoyed hikes through the Tree Farm her forester father maintained on their property. A fern collector aunt and parasitologist uncle share responsibility for her love of the woods. She is a UConn Certified Advanced Master Gardener, with special interests in environmental education and Integrated Pest Management. When harsh weather keeps her inside, Jude knits and weaves.

 

George and Cheryl St. John - Sales
George and Cheryl's interest in native and unusual plants led them to BAN where they were frequent visitors before joining the staff. The husband and wife team came to work at BAN after graduating with honors from Naugatuck Valley Community College with dual majors in Horticultural Sciences and Landscape Design. Their other interests include bonsai plants, sea kayaking and Tai Chi.
