Although this East Asian native is called a turtlehead there is no relation to our endemic Chelone. Being in the mint family it has greater similarities to salvias and catmints. Plants produce a 20-24” tall bushy clump with 2” green, oval, serrated foliage that turns a bronze color in cooler weather. From late summer through fall showy, 1.5” raspberry-red, tubular flowers develop. Requires organically-rich soils with full sun to part shade.
