    This grafted hickory tree (Carya) came from Earl Cully in 1963, an Illinois nut grower who introduced many trees including 'Cully' river birch (Betula nigra). The root stock is pecan (C. illinoinensis) and the graft a hybrid shellbark hickory (C. laciniosa) that proved of disappointing quality so we grafted it at 9 feet to a selected shagbark hickory (C. ovata). Note the shaggy bark above 9 feet.
