A choice small tree or large shrub that was widely promoted by the late J.C. Raulston in the 80's. J.C. in fact introduced the plant to western horticulture while exploring the rich mountain valleys of Asia on a U.S. National Arboretum collection expedition. The opposite, rich green, deciduous leaves are high in gloss and remain attractive through the gardening season. Inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers are borne in spring and make way for prolific bright red fruit capsules in autumn. As the capsules mature they split open to reveal black bead-like seeds. The gray striated reddish-brown bark is somewhat reminiscent of Carolina silverbell in youth and purple blushed fall tones complete the ornamental package. The easy to grow plants are pest free, performing best in bright positions with high organic matter and reasonable drainage.
