A large ash species found throughout much of Europe. Plants assume a rounded canopy in open scenarios with deep green pinnately compound leaves. Best performance will occur in organically rich, freely draining soils with freedom from heat and drought stress. We do not promote the straight species in our climate nor do we recommend the vast majority of its cultivars due to susceptibility to the emerald ash borer. The decidedly dwarf ‘Crispa’ is the lone exception. This small cultivar is a manageable size that can be more readily monitored for emerald ash borer and favorably treated if necessary.
