A tough, mat-forming, evergreen groundcover native throughout the eastern US. Thick, leathery, dark green leaves mingle with delicate pink-blushed, urn-shaped flowers in spring and rounded, scarlet berries in autumn. The fruit is edible offering the classic wintergreen taste. Best performance occurs in woodland settings in acidic soils that are rich in humus but freely draining.
