A long cultivated shrub species famed for its amazing late winter floral display. These significant evergreen plants have a storied religious and cultural relevance in their native Japan, Korea and China and are closely allied to the plant that tea is derived from (Camellia sinensis). In the garden plants showcase glossy, deep green leaves and tremendous floral variation. A goal of recent breeding work has focused on improved cold hardiness and the utilization of northern germplasm in Korea has led to dramatic improvements in recent years. In our region this cold hardy pedigree shows excellent potential with best performance occurring in shaded, wind free locations in rich, well drained soils. 8-12' high and wide.
