These unique plants take advantage of the harsh growing conditions of acidic, nutrient-poor bogs by using insects to supplement their diet. The pitchers are actually modified leaves, which have colorful patterns that mimic flowers. The leaves are covered with nectar to help lure insects to them. The beautiful flowers hang down from tall, thick, curved stems. These plants are easy to grow under sunny, bog-like conditions and make intriguing container subjects. Depending on the species, Sarracenia ranges from Canada to Florida. Thanks to the hybridizing efforts of North Carolina's Rob Gardner and Larry Mellichamp, many exciting selections are now available in addition to the diverse species.
