A unique monotypic genus native to southern Japan where it occurs in moist dense forests. The overall appearance is somewhat similar to an arborvitae but is generally slightly coarser in both texture and branch structure. Foliage is medium-green throughout the growing season taking on some bronze and orange hues in cooler weather. Best when grown in evenly moist, well-drained soil in full sun or bright shade.
