A rare southeastern US native which has a reputation as being fussy and difficult to propagate but SO worth the effort. This understory tree is covered with clouds of white flowers in the summer, all with pinkish-purple filaments and blue anthers that give them an almost otherworldly look. Scarlet fall color and cinnamon bark round out the multi-season appeal with true panache. Demands good drainage but likes even moisture, partial shade, and slightly acidic soil.
